Time for a “Detox” in Agriculture

Spread the word

Challenges of pesticide use and regulation in Nigeria and possible solutions.

Time for a Detox in Agriculture highlights the urgent challenges facing Nigeria’s agricultural sector and the need for safer, more sustainable food production. While agriculture contributes about 22 per cent of GDP and employs over a third of the workforce, it struggles with climate change, conflict, rapid population growth, and rising food insecurity.

To boost productivity, farming has increasingly relied on harmful pesticides and chemical inputs. This has contributed to serious health concerns, environmental damage, and declining biodiversity, while Nigeria continues to face high levels of malnutrition.

Developed by Heinrich Böll Foundation-Abuja, the publications review pesticide use in Nigeria, its impacts on people and the environment, and the policy gaps that sustain harmful practices. It advocates for organic, sustainable farming methods to improve food safety, protect ecosystems, and strengthen long-term food security.
