ESTABLISHMENT

How We Started

On October 28, 2021, a collective of over 40 CSOs, NGOs, academic institutions, and independent Nigerian scientists united to address the looming threats of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) in Nigeria. This pivotal meeting marked the birth of the Alliance for Action on Pesticide in Nigeria (AAPN).

Today, AAPN is a loose coalition of over 80 civil society organizations, farmers and farm input dealers associations, academia, researchers, and interested members of the public. The Alliance seeks to increase public awareness of pesticide issues for informed pesticide choice, and usage and shift to safer sustainable farm methods and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) systems/methods. The alliance also seeks to ensure improved pesticide regulations in Nigeria; protect both human and environmental health, guard Nigeria’s food security, and improve food sustainability.

Our vision

What We Believe

We are committed to increasing awareness and demanding improved regulation of pesticide entry, trade, and use in Nigeria. Our focus extends beyond regulations – we strive to promote sustainable, safe food and farm methods, ensuring the health and well-being of our communities and environment.

Our Mission

Our Goals

  • To phase out all Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs), obsolete, banned and adulterated pesticides from Nigeria and West Africa.
  • To prevent future pesticide hazards in the region, we will use evidence-based advocacy, public awareness campaigns, training, and institution strengthening.
  • To emphasise the promotion of more sustainable, nature-friendly farm systems and healthier, and safer foods.

OUR STRATEGY

Working Groups

The alliance comprises four major working groups integral to our strategic endeavours aimed at advocating for responsible pesticide regulation and fostering sustainable agricultural practices, such as agroecology, within Nigeria.

Advocating for Responsible Pesticide Regulation

  • Advocate for reduced support and dependence on Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) and conventional farming systems in Africa.
  • Lobby for the introduction and enhancement of regulations and legislation governing the import, trade, and usage of pesticides in Nigeria and Africa.
  • Collaborate with the government to improve pesticide regulation in Nigeria and develop phase-out frameworks for hazardous pesticides in Nigeria and Africa.
  • Champion global efforts to cease the exportation of banned chemical pesticides and Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) into Africa.

Rethinking Agricultural Practices

  • Foster the development and scaling of agroecological practices, organic farming, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Nigeria.
  • Facilitate the establishment and operations of agroecological farms, provide organic farming workshops, and deliver training on sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Organize exhibitions and field tours showcasing organic agroecological solutions for food security and biodiversity restoration.
  • Promote policies, capacity building, and investments for organic and regenerative farming in Nigeria and Africa.

Science, Evidence and Research

  • Conduct research on the human and environmental costs associated with pesticide usage.
  • Gather evidence on pesticide hazards across Nigeria and Africa.
  • Compile and develop economic models pertaining to agroecology and organic farming systems and businesses.
  • Create a thorough pesticide database, including organic farm input mapping, and foster academic and sectoral dialogue on pesticides and organic farming.

Communication and Public Awareness

  • Increase awareness among consumers and farmers regarding the hazards of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) in Nigeria.
  • Amplify the narrative of safe and sustainable organic farming practices, such as agroecology.
  • Support showcasing and exhibition events highlighting organic solutions and agroecological practices.
  • Address safety misconceptions about hazardous pesticides and simplify information on pesticide risks and nature-based alternatives.
